Hash Shit awarded to Steve Young

Run No 9

We gathered at Old Road Bay at 4pm as instructed, to find hares, a golf buggy and some bemused-looking hashers waiting for something to happen. Moose Dick distributed ash masks (get rid of any mask with 3 dots, he said – they all had 3 dots) and soon we were on our way up the steps and through the Vue Pointe (sorry Carol). TJ set off at a ferocious pace, getting to the first check right but seemed to lose it from there. The trail took us up past Geoff’s house (strange not to go in for a beer when passing) and up and round to Olveston house. Here the walkers made a loop down through Isles Bay Plantation, back again through the Vue Pointe (sorry Cedric) and down to the beach. Not the longest of trails for the walkers (but this isn’t a complaint). The runners went on up the hill, past the police station, and then on to Salem. From there the trail meandered down the gentle slope to the Belham valley - the best part for running after the exertions of the previous hills. One or two SCBs (eg Alex, Colin) didn’t go up the steep one-way road, but sailed contemptuously past and rejoined the trail further down the hill. They were suitably punished later. The trail continued across the Belham in the worrying direction of Garibaldi Hill. Fortunately at the last moment it veered off down the embankment and back towards the beach. However, before it got there the intrepid runners had to cross a large pile of ash and Alex was so keen to get back that he failed to notice the quick sand on the other side. He was soon up to his waist in it and stuck fast. Despite several suggestions to leave him there one or two more conscientious hashers decided a rescue was in order (you never know when you’re going to need a pallet; when will they start including them on Swiss Army knives?).

Steve and Lorrie Young came in behind the walkers having set off late, but some gentle hints from the hares got them to the circle before nightfall.

Glen and Ken couldn’t make up their minds whether they wanted to be with the runners or walkers so did both trails. Max christened the marina as the less confused runners made their way back along the beach. Paul Morris was so disillusioned by seeing the front runners on the other side of the Belham that he abandoned the route half way and made his way back along the valley (to note for next hash’s misdemeanours). We noted TJ’s absence – strange as Bonnie said he was usually the first back. About 40 minutes later, just as we were about to dispatch a search party, he was spotted on the other side of the valley, Bonnie leapt off to join him. He seemed to have enjoyed himself wherever he got to.

After the Down-downs we trooped off to Danny & Margaret’s for a spot of lasagne, Liz joined us with a crate of Oriole beer, and then it was back to the circle area for a bonfire (thank you, Sarah). The golf buggy was despatched for various hair-raising beer procurement missions, but returned more or less unscathed. Oh yes, and then some of us made it on to Miser’s… (can’t quite ready my handwriting, something about John leading a string of people doing the conga round the pool table? Surely not).

A great Day, thanks to all involved.
