Run No 21 - 8 June 2002

For the Charity Run in aid of the Montserrat Special Olympics we were told to assemble by the Browne & Roote sign at the Look Out turn off.

At the appointed time hardy hashers gathered at the turn off as instructed, somewhat apprehensive that the whole of Look Out community might be there following excellent media coverage. They weren't. Nor was the Chief Hare who had set off some time previously to arrange his army of helpers. A rather nervous GM repeatedly asked about the Hare's whereabouts, but was reassured that he would return at some stage. He eventually did and after a quick briefing about the Hash, the extra playing card scheme, the handing out of tokens and an explanation of how the trail was marked, we eventually set off close to nightfall.

We were very pleased to see that the Minister of Environment had honoured us with her presence and encouraged by such ministerial commitment and exuberance the runners and walkers set off at a fast rate. Fifty yards later we were at a snail's pace except for a few hardy runners led by Steaming Eruption Dr Sewage and Birdman II. The trail was liberally marked with flour with one dot every 500 yards or so. Luckily, there was not much option for wrong turns. Every now and then a road would lead off the main track and the runners would be guided down there to receive a playing card and then demoralisingly return to the back of the walkers' group. Good hashing strategy to keep the pack together ! Well done Hares.

The runners eventually went all the way to Jack Boy Hill, before turning back to re-do half the trail again. The sight of the front pack returning the same way was a bitter blow to morale for the chasing runners who were in severe distress by this stage: the GMs face had turned from its usual redness into a worryingly scary purple; Odd Shaped Balls was clutching his chest and complained of feeling unwell - typical heart attack symptoms which of course were ignored by his fellow runners.

Eventually, however, all made it back safely to a rocky, but spectacular beach from where the Down Downs were held. An excellent run all round and all for a worthy cause.

Special mention should, of course, be made to the Hares for all their efforts. But also many thanks to the assistants who helped dish out the cards, to the Beer Master who selflessly (along with Rusty) gave up running to serve his fellow Hashers, to Martin who generously gave back his winning hand winnings, to the Governor for donating a case of beer, to Delta who promised EC$ 300 towards the Down Down beers, and to everyone who came and contributed generously. In total a massive amount of EC$'s were raised (sorry exact figure not known at time of writing) for the Special Needs Olympics. Well done!

ON ON!
