Run No 5

Good turnout for run no. 5. The group gathered at the delightful waste land next to the MAS building. John and Helen's dog, Ben, added to the overall charm of the area by depositing a rather large turd, at considerable effort, on the only patch of grass around. It was thus unsurprising that the Hashers were keen to get away and departed pretty well on time past the bars at Cudgoe Head (rule no. 3 - never pass a bar) and up the road in the direction of Cavalla Hill. A well marked trail which soon had the pack strung out and cursing up one of Montserrat's 562 steep gradients.

Helen and the GM found themselves at the front which meant they had to check out the false trails. The GM was grateful that he chose the right route every time and consequently Helen ran an additional extra third as much again of the run. This was not totally coincidental. Unwritten rule of hashing is that most obvious trails are likely to be false. Helen to note for next time.

Meanwhile true Hashers were observing rule no. 3 at the Grand View. Top marks. The trail continued through pristine oriole country. Unsurprisingly these fictitious birds were nowhere to be seen.

The trail became somewhat confusing when it looped back on itself, but all was revealed and resolved as Lewis appeared and led the front runners back to the right trail. Good detective work Lewis. In doing so they passed the rest of the pack coming up the hill. In a very unhashing manner this pack continued their ascent rather than following the front runners back down again.

Finally the trail made a long downward spiral to the waste ground again. No sign of the beer master who was still at the Grand View. Improvisation was therefore necessary to open the first ales, but Helen found that the goat tethered there was unobliging. Lewis helped out.

At last the rest of the pack staggered back and the On On commenced.

Venue for run no 6 is Woodlands Beach, 4pm Saturday 5 April 2001.
